Our History

A fixture of the village for over 30 years
The Tilney St Lawrence Village Hall opened in 1991 after the result of many years of fund-raising, planning and co-operation by a few villagers aiming to provide the village with a facility benefiting the whole community.
Before the new hall was built the village hall which was located on St John’s Road on the crossroads next to the village shop.
The village hall had hosted functions since the beginning of the 20th century but the hall belonged to the Oddfellows association and the group were planning to sell the building in the mid-1980s therefore leaving the village with no hall. The asking price was £800 to prevent the hall being sold.
At that time the Hall committee had disbanded and so the Playing Field committee assisted and with many donations the hall was bought. At that time the hall was called The Playing Field Village Hall.
Then the opportunity arose for a new hall to be built on the defunct bowling green on the playing field so with funds from the sale of the old hall plot for housing, parish council financial support, grants and many local fundraising activities, the £100,000 needed was finally found to begin construction.
On the 27th April 1991 a buffet dance was held to celebrate the opening of the hall with the official opening ceremony held on the 22nd June. The hall was opened by Rev. Robert Wright along with a garden fete, and an evening disco and BBQ, £700 was raised for furnishings and finishing touches to the new hall.
